Failed rallies and the echo chamber of discontent

I was just reading through various reports on the underwhelming rally that was held by Malaysia’s right-wing opposition in the heart of our city centre yesterday

When Politicians Want To Go To Heaven

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: It was reported that UMNO’s sole assemblyman in Kelantan, Mohd Syahbuddin Hashim, voted along with the rest of the state legislature to support a motion to re-enact provisions of the Shariah criminal code that the Federal Court recently declared unconstitutional. In explaining the assembly’s puerile act of defiance of the highest court in the land, Syahbuddin said, “We want to go to heaven”.

Would Pakatan Harapan Win GE15?

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia--As the tempo for a Pakatan Harapan (PH) win rises, we have the associated intellectuals pleading with voters to exercise their democratic vote to seal the deal for the coalition. We even had one top legal mind articulating that constitutionally the party with the most MPs should be called to form the government the very next day.

Who Says UMNO Is Sure To Form The Next Government

JOHOR BAHRU, Malaysia--There has been a sense of hopelessness among many opposition leaders and supporters, and the wider Malaysian population. It is as if we are waiting for the inevitable, that UMNO, in its unreformed and unrepentant form led by the Court Cluster, in particular Dato’ Seri Najib Razak and Dato’ Seri Zahid Hamidi, is going to win the next general election on its terms.

2022: A Year For Yet Another Reset For Malaysian Democracy

JOHOR BAHRU, Malaysia--If politics in the year 2020 was bad for Malaysia, when the elected Pakatan Harapan government was toppled via defections, 2021 was certainly worse. Yet, I believe that when we look back in the years to come, 2021 could be the norm-setting year for Malaysian democracy, albeit in the most unwitting manner.

Why Middle Malaysia Is Important

JOHOR BAHRU, Malaysia -- In the age of hyper-polarisation, championing the cause of the middle ground or moderation seems unfashionable, akin to drinking coffee without sugar or milk, as scholar Wong Chin Huat once said. But as responsible leaders, we must be clear-eyed on what is ultimately good for health.
