NEW DELHI, India: The shifting landscape of global conflict has exposed a profound double standard at the heart of Western foreign policy.

As geopolitical friction intensifies in the Middle East, American military officials and politicians have expressed sharp indignation over intelligence reports indicating that Russia, alongside broader strategic backing from China, has provided targeting data, satellite surveillance, and technical assistance to Iran and its regional partners. These transfers have reportedly enabled precision strikes against forward-deployed US troops, warships, and military installations.

Yet, Washington’s public outrage ignores a glaring strategic reality. Having spent years orchestrating a proxy campaign against Russian territory in Eastern Europe, the expectation that Western forces would retain total immunity across other operational theatres is not merely unrealistic; it is strategically naive.

The Western Proxy Blueprint in Eastern Europe

The conflict in Ukraine established the modern template for proxy warfare between major powers. Washington and its NATO partners moved far beyond defensive material support, supplying Kyiv with real-time satellite intelligence, long-range missile systems such as ATACMS and Storm Shadow, and precise target coordination.

These assets have been systematically deployed to hit critical infrastructure, logistics hubs, and military command posts deep inside internationally recognised Russian territory.

From Moscow’s perspective, Western intelligence officers actively guiding strikes on Russian assets constitutes direct participation in hostilities—an undeclared state of war disguised behind military aid packages.

While Russia demonstrated notable restraint by avoiding direct kinetic retaliation against NATO territory, Western strategists made a critical miscalculation. They assumed Russia would endure a relentless, technology-driven proxy campaign on its doorstep without exploiting Western vulnerabilities elsewhere across the globe.

The Collapse of Unilateral Escalation Dominance

American foreign policy has long rested on the assumption of escalation dominance—the idea that Washington can wage proxy conflicts, enforce punitive sanctions, and conduct global power projection while keeping its own remote bases insulated from direct consequence. The reality unfolding in the Middle East shatters this illusion.

When Washington complains that Russian satellite arrays are transmitting the location of US carrier strike groups and airfield deployments to regional adversaries, it reflects a refusal to accept the rules of engagement that Western powers themselves created.

If NATO claims the right to provide targeting data to hit Russian targets in Europe, Moscow possesses equal strategic justification to supply real-time intelligence to counter American force projection in the Middle East. The mechanics of modern proxy warfare are inherently reciprocal; an adversary under pressure will inevitably open secondary fronts to dilute Western resources and attention.

A Permanently Interconnected Global Battlefield

The integration of Russian military intelligence and Chinese technological supply chains into Middle Eastern security dynamics signals a fundamental realignment in global power projection. Major powers seeking to check Western influence have recognised that containing American power requires raising the operational costs for US forces wherever they deploy.

Moving forward, the United States and its allies must confront an unforgiving operational landscape. Any future military intervention, freedom of navigation patrol, or proxy operation initiated by Washington will no longer take place in a strategic vacuum.

Western forces will routinely operate under the eye of adversary satellite networks, electronic warfare systems, and shared intelligence architectures. By normalizing deep-strike proxy warfare in Europe, the United States permanently rewritten the rules of international conflict—and it can no longer pretend to be surprised by the global consequences.
