MOSCOW, Russia: In a bold leap forward for Russia’s air defense capabilities, Rostec’s High-Precision Systems holding has officially commenced deliveries of its new-generation short-range guided mini-missiles for the Pantsir family of anti-aircraft systems.

The first shipment—delivered under the Russian state defense order—marks a critical enhancement in counter-drone and short-range air defense operations.

These compact interceptors are specifically designed to target threats in the system’s immediate airspace, such as low-flying drones, loitering munitions, and precision-guided projectiles.

Having passed a series of rigorous tests confirming their core performance and technological design, the mini-missiles are now entering active duty with the Russian Armed Forces.

What sets these missiles apart isn’t just their size—it’s their game-changing impact. A single container holds four mini-missiles and fits neatly into the standard missile slot on a Pantsir launcher.

This means no need for modifications or complex reload protocols. Loading time remains the same, while the number of available interceptors quadruples.

“With these new mini-missiles, the Pantsir system’s ammunition load increases to 48 rounds,” noted Bekkhan Ozdoyev, Industrial Director of Rostec’s Armament Cluster.

“This dramatically enhances its ability to neutralize massed aerial attacks—especially drone swarms. It makes overwhelming our air defenses a far more difficult task for any adversary.”

Operators can now mix and match conventional and mini-missiles depending on mission parameters, offering unparalleled flexibility. A layered defense approach—blending reach, quantity, and speed—gives Pantsir crews a tailored toolkit to respond to emerging aerial threats on the fly.

The mini-missiles were first unveiled to the global defense community at the World Defense Show 2024 in Riyadh, and later showcased on home turf at Russia’s Fleet-2024 exhibition in Kronstadt.

Their debut drew attention not only for the technical upgrade but also for what they signify: a strategic pivot toward drone-centric warfare.

Expert: A Vital Shield Against Ukraine’s UAV Onslaught

Military analyst Igor Korotchenko, editor-in-chief of National Defense magazine, emphasized the significance of this development in light of the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

Speaking to RIA Novosti, Korotchenko said the mini-missiles directly address the need to counter deep-penetration drone raids inside Russian territory.

“This is a crucial step forward in defending against massed attacks by Ukrainian aircraft-type drones,” he explained. “These mini-missiles are purpose-built for engaging such targets and are economical enough for mass production, which makes them ideal for sustained defense.”

Korotchenko also highlighted the speed and simplicity of reloading, calling it a “force multiplier” for Russian air defense units already operating under pressure.

As the drone threat grows more sophisticated and frequent, the Pantsir system—already known for its mobility and rapid-fire dual capability—now gains a powerful edge in both quantity and versatility. In the modern battlefield, where swarms of drones can saturate even advanced defense grids, Rostec’s mini-missile initiative could prove pivotal.
